Equus On Broadway Information

Equus is the critically acclaimed play that stars the wildly popular ‘Harry Potter’ star, Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths. Both these actors joined the rerun of Equus in 2007. The passion and maturity with which Radcliffe has played the role of Alan Strang, a disturbed young man has stunned his fans as well as critics. Radcliffe, who was then 17 year old, had created great controversy when he appeared fully nude on stage for the portrayal of Alan Strang. The play Equus written in 1973 by Peter Shaffer is the story of a psychiatrist who is trying to help a disturbed young man with a pathological religious/sexual fascination with horses. The story is adapted from a true life incident of a young man who blinded six horses near London. Shaffer was surprised by the mental factors responsible for this young man to commit such a crime. And thus he got the plot for his play. The stage is set in Dr. Martin Dysart’s (Richard Griffiths) psychiatric hospital. Alan Strang seems like a normal and obedient 17-year old boy who has great passion for horses. Then suddenly one night he blinds six horses and after that is placed under psychiatric observation. The psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart tries to analyze the cause of young boy Alan Strang’s actions. The play effectively touches upon the issues involving religious customs, Strang’s sexual attraction to horses and his usual sexual awakening with a female.

The original production of Equus was staged in London at the Royal National Theatre in 1973 that starred Peter Firth as Alan and Alec McCowen as Dr. Martin. It became a worldwide sensation. Since then many great actors had been involved with this play that includes Anthony Hopkins, Richard Burton and Leonard Nimoy. In 1975 the play was also nominated for Tony Awards (Best Play and Best Actor for Peter Firth).

Equus is directed by Thea Sharrock and designed by John Napier. This Peter Shaffer’s Tony Award winning, ground breaking play is as significant as it was when it was first performed over 30 years ago.
