Equus The Play
HARRY POTTER STAR COMES TO BROADWAY! Coming off a critically acclaimed sold-out West End run Equus makes its way to the Broadhurst Theatre this fall. The controversial drama which stars Daniel Radcliffe began previews on September 5, 2008 and is scheduled to officially open on September 25, 2008. This marks the first time in over thirty years that this award winning play is coming back to Broadway. The production chronicles the disturbing details of a young man who by all accounts seems to be a normal teenager with a passion for horses but on the inside he harbors something very dark. He proves just how dark one night when he takes a hoof pick and blinds six horses. No one can seem to explain his act since he seems to have a loving family and a stable routine. But, the question remains; what would drive him to commit such s horrendous act of violence? After this bizarre incident his psychiatrist is left to unlock the mystery of this teenager. The groundbreaking play was written by Tony award winning author (Amadeus) Peter Schaffer. He was inspired to write the play when he heard of a crime involving a boy who had blinded six horses. Without knowing the details surrounding the crime he set out to create a totally fictional account of what might have caused the incident. The play originally opened in London in 1973 and transferred to Broadway two years later where it enjoyed a record breaking run and won the Tony award for Best Play. It was also made into a film starring Richard Burton. The current production stars Radcliffe in his Broadway debut. He is transferring from the London production but is best known for portraying the title role in all five installments of the popular Harry Potter films. Tony and Olivier award winner Richard Griffins is also making the transfer from the London production. He has had both an extensive and impressive theater career throughout the years. In 2005 he one the Olivier award for his portrayal of Hector in History Boys and the following year picked up the Tony award for the same role. He and Radcliffe are no strangers since he has portrayed Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter films. Also in the play is actress Kate Mulgrew who is probably best known for her work as Captain Kathyrn Janeway in the television series Star Trek: Voyager. Equus is a provocative story that will leave the audience deep in thought even after the production has ended. It raises thought provoking issues and deals with an extremely disturbed main character. The story, cast and material will not leave you disappointed. Get your Equus the play tickets today as the production is on a limited engagement and is set to close on February 4, 2009.
