The critically acclaimed play ‘Equus’ written by Peter Shaffer is currently running in the Broadway Theatre, New York, US. Equus tickets are much in demand for the play’s brilliant screenplay about a psychiatrist trying to treat a normal looking young man who is fascinated by horses but blinds six of them for some unknown reason. The play, stunning yet shocking is inspired by a real London incident heard by Shaffer. Broadway produced Equus outlines the efforts made by child psychiatrist, Dr. Martin Dysart to find out and understand the cause of the boy’s actions and in the process unravels some disturbing facts. So get Equus tickets quickly and watch the drama unfold.

The Popularity Of The Play

Running successfully since September 25, 2008 the play directed by Thea Sharrock is being staged for a 22-week period ending on February 8, 2009. This very famous and powerful play was first staged in 1973 at the Royal National Theatre in London. The play was also adapted into a film by the same name in 1977 and starred Richard Burton, Peter Firth and Eileen Atkins who were nominated for several academy awards and won a number of Golden Globe awards. The play made its debut on Broadway in October 1974 at the Plymouth Theatre. The production directed by John Dexter won the 1975 Tony award for Best Play and starred Anthony Hopkins as Dysart and Peter Firth as Alan Strang.

Equus, revived in 2007, also mesmerizes viewers with its portrayal of Alan Strang who views horses as a representative of God but confuses his attraction to them with sexual tones. A major attraction of the play is the conflict depicted between personal values and goals and the society’s expectations.

Story Summary

Dysart is a psychiatrist who treats mentally ill patients and is approached by a court magistrate to understand the case of Alan Strang who has blinded six horses with a metal spike. The play outlines how Dysart tries to connect with Alan through advertising jingles and than playing question answer games. In the process Dysart realizes that Alan has conflicting religious and sexual values because of his mother who is a devout Christian and his father who is an atheist. The interaction also reveals Alan’s fascination for horses and his dream of freeing them from chains. So hurry up before Equus tickets are no longer available.

Produced on Broadway by the Shubert Organization, the revived play stars Daniel Radcliffe, known for his Harry Potter films, as the disturbed table boy Alang Strang while Richard Griffith who won the Tony Award for “The History Boys” plays the role of the psychiatrist. Recently, Equus concluded several successful shows running over a five month period at London’s Gielgud Theatre. The two stars received significant critical praise for their roles in the show. Radcliffe has received lots of media attention mainly because of his much talked about nude scene in the play. The creative team of the play includes set and costume designer John Napier, lighting designer David Hersey and sound designer Gregory Clarke.
