Everyday Rapture - A New Musical Experience
A new and exciting musical "Everyday Rapture" has made it to Broadway with critical acclaim. The story of one woman's enlightenment through a sexual spiritual journey from the mid-west country life of Kansas to the bright lights and big city life inside Manhattan. A "sort of" auto-biographical story of a Sherie Rene Scott who is caught between her religious country upbringing and her longing foreshadowing stardom in the likes of Judy Garland. The musical hopped right into the American Airlines Theatre as a cancellation of "Lips Together, Teeth Apart" caused the Roundabout Theatre Company to have sudden scheduling problems. Hardly a dilemma for Sherie Rene Scott who now finds herself firmly planted on the Broadway stage in a situation that only adds to the mystique of her story.
The cast for Everyday Rapture includes such names as Eamon Foley, Betsy Wolfe, Sherie Rene Scott and Lindsay Mendez and includes such guests as Rosie O'Donnell, Sara Gettelfinger and Natasha Lyonne. The musical also is being directed by Michael Mayer who has been lending his skills to the production when not working on his own popular musical "American Idiot" in addition playing currently on Broadway. Mr. Mayer is also known for the staging of "Spring Awakening" last season, which enjoyed a successful run. The musical was first seen Off Broadway at the Second Stage Theater last spring and with the help of the scheduling problems was quickly thrown into the limelight.
Everyday Rapture is far from a conventional musical, especially for a Broadway production. It is perhaps the most unconventional musical to come along to The Great White Way in recent years. For many this is not only a good thing but a great surprise which keeps many theater fans coming back to Broadway even after so many disappointments. It is musicals such as this, which are able to bring the allure and love for Broadway back into the hearts of those who love them and also remind us all of why the "musical" is such an intricate part of the new York arts and culture scene.
The orchestrations and arrangements for Everyday Rapture come from Tom Kitt, the composer of "Next To Normal". He puts together a top rate on-stage band including Lindsay Mendez and Betsy Wolfeher as her backup singers and going by the name the Mennonettes. The band and songs blend wonderfully with the choreography of Michele Lynch and are all brought together with a set by Christine Jones and the lighting of Kevin Adams, which blend together the Sherie Rene Scott's honky-tonk Jesus loving upbringing with her Judy Garland starlight ambitions.
For those who love the Broadway musical than Everyday Rapture should be added to the list of new shows to see. It brings what those who love musicals have been missing for the last few years along The Great White Way. While it certainly does not carry the factors of a blockbuster by Broadway standards the cast and performance are sure to deliver great delight and charm to all who attend.
