The Powerful True Life Story Returns To Broadway!

Evita tickets head to the box office for March 2012 previews. The powerful rock opera of music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice is sure to turn heads along "The Great White Way." The true-life story of Argentine political leader Eva Perón first debuted on Broadway back in 1979 is scheduled for opening night on April 5 at the Marquis Theatre.

Evita began as a rock opera album which was released in 1976. The first theatrical staging premiered at the Prince Edward Theatre in London's West End on June 21, 1978. The "West End' production ran for 2,900 performances, closing on February 8, 1986. The collaboration of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice received some acclaimed critical response but New York critics treated the production harshly.

The original Broadway production opened at the Broadway Theatre on September 25, 1979. Broadway superstar Patti LuPone starred in the lead role as Eva under the direction of Harold Prince. During the run which lasted 1,567 performances the lead role alternated between six actresses; Terri Klausner, Nancy Opel, Pamela Blake (matinees), Derin Altay, Loni Ackerman and Florence Lacey (evenings). LuPone was quite outspoken about her dislike of the production, particularly the way she was treated throughout the run.

Evita tickets went on sale worldwide for many touring productions throughout the 1980s, 1990, and 2000s. In 2006 the first London revival was staged twenty-five years after the original premiere. Evita was back on The West End at the Adelphi Theatre. Michael Grandage directed a strong cast, including Argentine actress Elena Roger as Eva, Philip Quast as Perón and Matt Rawle as Che. The rework included changes made popular from the 1996 film adaptation which starred pop icon Madonna. The production included the song "You Must Love Me," from the movie which was never before included in a staging of the rock opera. The revival production received solid reviews but closed quickly due to slow ticket sales.

The 2012 Broadway revival is based on the 2006 West End rework. Actress Elena Roger will take on the lead role of Eva with Ricky Martin as Che and Michael Cerveris as Peron. The Broadway staging will include Christina DeCicco as the alternate for Eva Perón. Michael Grandage directs with choreography by Rob Ashford, costume design by Christopher Oram and lighting design by Neil Austin. Evita tickets are now on sale for previews at the Marquis Theatre starting on March 12. The revival is scheduled for an open-ended run. Coming off the strong West End run which won over critics "Evita" is sure to be a blockbuster on Broadway the spring.
