HILARIOUS COMEDY RETURNS TO BROADWAY!

Academy Award winners Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon star in the revival tragicomedy Exit the King which opens on March 26, 2009 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The show is currently in previews. This is the first Broadway revival of the absurd comedy by Eugene Ionesco since it debuted in 1968. Originally written in 1962 the play chronicles the slow death of a king whose reign has outlasted its welcome.

Berenger I is sovereign to a crumbling kingdom; his vast armies are dispersed, the walls of the castle are tumbling down and the people under his rule no longer believe in him. Many years of incompetence has left his country in complete and utter disarray. Despite the best efforts of the Queen and the other members of his royal court to convince him that he only has ninety minutes to live he refuses to relinquish control.

This is the third in Ionesco’s Berenger cycle; the first two being The Killer (1958) and Rinoceros (1959). In the current production the talented Rush stars as the King and e also collaborated on the translation of the play to the stage. He is probably best known for his Oscar winning role of David Helfgott in Shine. While this production marks his first Broadway role he has been acting and directing for the Australian stage for the past thirty-five years. In the role of Queen Marguerite is award winning actress Sarandon. She is best known for her roles in Thelma & Louise, The Client, Stepmom and Dead Man Walking for which she won an Oscar. She made her Broadway debut in 1972 in the production An Evening with Richard Nixon and … This is her first appearance on the Broadway stage since her debut. The cast also includes Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) and Tony award winner Andrea Martin (My Favorite Year and Young Frankenstein).

Come see why the New York Post said, “HILARIOUS! Geoffrey Rush is BRILLIANT. THIS IS NOT TO BE MISSED.” The production is on a limited run and is scheduled to close on June 14, 2009. Don’t wait, get your Exit The King tickets today.
