Story Of Fela Kuti Returns To The Big Stage!

Fela Broadway tickets are now selling for the Broadway production after a very successful off-Broadway run. The off-Broadway stage show garnered great praise and attracted an audience which included the likes of Alicia Keys to Susan Sarandon to Stephen Sondheim to Jay-Z. Fela is based on music and lyrics by the late Nigerian singer Fela Kuti. The story follows the life of this important composer and activist, telling his inspirational tale. The musical will open at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre for a limited run this summer and is well worth checking out.

Fela Broadway tickets have sold for Broadway before. The musical spent a month off-Broadway in 2008 before transferring to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on October 19, 2009 for early previews. The cast includes Ngaujah and Kevin Mambo as Fela, Saycon Sengbloh as Sandra and Lillias White as Funmilayo. Patti LaBelle eventually joined the production, replacing Lillias White as Funmilayo. The premiere production enjoyed great praise and was nominated for eleven Tony Awards. The first Broadway production closed on January 2, 2011. The show then went on a successful tour and making a return to Broadway for its limited run.

Fela the musical starts at the height of Fela Kuti's influence as a prominent composer in Nigeria. Kuti became popular for his Afrobeat sounds. He would play clubs in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. The city was also a spot for much of the nation's youth to gather who were opposed to Nigerian military control. Fela Kuti's mother was a strong advocate of Nigerian civil right and Fela himself became torn on his quest for success and his political importance. Fela began to make more ministerial music, adding complexity to his lyrics. The music being produced by Fela quickly causes a response from the military regime, whom retaliate with violence. Fela retaliates with his biggest International hit " Zombie," which opening critiques the government and military of Nigeria. A choice which ends in hallowing consequences for himself and his family.

Fela Broadway tickets make the massive move from a small off-Broadway theater of 299 seats to the competing marques of Broadway seating over 1000. With the huge summer blockbusters and visitors being attracted to the larger jukebox and mainstream productions it is difficult to for see how Fela! will make out. Even producers are wary of how their show will do financially. Few people are conscious of the story and the importance of Fela musically and politically. Those who are aware are sure to have the show at the top of their list. The production also does not carry with it any big names or at least one star to throw on the marquee to bring in an audience. The show will have to rely on its positive reviews and word of mouth hype as it has done off-Broadway so far. Fela is an interesting story filled with great music and for those looking for something new and different without tons of bells and whistles make sure to check it out!
