The Fela on Broadway is the original musical show is coming soon to the theatres. Fela Kuti, the legendary African singer and the creator of Afrobeat music is performing live on stage. Not literally, but the story of his life is portrayed in this musical. This is a real story of a true hero who was arrested for more than 200 times in his entire life. He inspired and influenced people through his work of art and politics. This is not fiction but a touching tale of an extraordinary hero. Fela Anikulapo Kuti is a known revolutionary music composer and his soul stirring music will be played live on stage. His music is a blend of jazz, funk, traditional Yoruba and African rhythm; hence the term Afrobeat music. The musical stars Sahr Ngaujah and is directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones.

Storyline

The story of this legendary music composer has several twists and turns and comes across as a work of fiction. However, the play portrays the true-life of this musician who died of AIDS. He was usually surrounded by controversies due to his political aspirations. Fela was sent to London by his parents to study medicine, but fate had something else in store for him. He was more inclined towards music and studied composition along with his medical studies. Soon, he formed a band in 1961 and was a hit in London nightclubs. Not just that, he traveled throughout the world and spread his unique music. He was not into politics until he came in contact with the work of Malcolm X, who inspired him to take up Black Nationalism seriously. The result was Fela’s return to Lagos and political activism. He fought against oppression, the military and the African government. He contested for the Presidential election, but was not successful. His music transformed into a revolution. A musical revolution, if we may call it. His life was full of thrilling plots, though unbelievable, but true. Some truths about his life are startling enough to seem fictional. For instance, he was arrested for more than 200 times in his life. Isn’t that astounding? Well, that’s him for you.
