Broadway Play (Drama)

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

With the majority of Broadway box office grosses slumping under lackluster economic condition's Fences on Broadway has become a box office grossing smash. Perhaps many have seen Wicked a few times and are ready to move on or big Hollywood names such as Denzel Washington bring out the masses, whatever the reason audiences are filling into the Cort Theatre night after night regardless of the high ticket prices which are due to most performances being sold out.

Of course the above statement is meant with mild humor as there are many reasons in which theater fans are dashing to the doors. For one, the play is written by August Wilson and part of his "Pittsburgh Cycle" of plays. For many who have seen other plays in the cycle this one is not to be missed. The 1987 production that played on Broadway won a Pulitzer price along with 4 Tony Awards including Best Play for the year. This is the first revival of the 1987 production and is only playing a limited-engagement which means after July 11, 2010, there will be no more performances. Oh yeah, plus Denzel Washington is playing the lead role for the character of Troy Maxson, a small city garbage man who dreams of playing professional baseball.

The Cycle

What has become known as the "Pittsburgh Cycle" is a grouping of 10 plays written by the legendary August Wilson. These plays encase the 20th century narrative of the African-American experience through the writer's eyes. Mr. Wilson does a wonderful job using each play to capture a fragment of a distinct time period, roughly around a decade per play. Each of the stories uses a character and then places them into a specific situation of a certain place. It is through these periods of time and situations that the power of the characters is explored and their relevance to the history being brought back to life on the stage. Each character's complexity is well developed and requires great acting skills in order to bring forth the depth of stories intermingled within the character study.

While there will always be some discussion and opinion as to which play in the cycle is the best work Fences on Broadway is certainly a show not to be missed. While many probably will not be able to catch a performance due to the tough economic times, short schedule and limited ticket availability for those who are able to get through the doors the play with not leave you disappointed. Even for those unfamiliar with the writers work and style the performance of Denzel Washington alone is worth the price of admission and the audience lets him know with foot stomping applause each night.

Fences on Broadway tickets are running between sixty and a hundred dollars for those able to book them through the box office directly. Due to the high demand for the show and it's limited run tickets have been selling out weekly. The secondary ticket market has many great seats available at a higher cost, but you are assured legitimate seats without a hassle. Expect to pay around a hundred dollars per ticket for an average seat and upwards of three hundred per ticket for a front and center orchestra ticket.
