Academy Award winner Denzel Washington tackles August Wilson

The first Broadway revival of Fences, the 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play by August Wilson, opens at the Cort Theatre on April 26, 2010. The production stars two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington along with Oscar nominee and Tony winner Viola Davis. This production is one play in a cycle of ten about the African-American experience in the 20th century.

The story takes place over eight years from 1957 to 1965. It centers on Troy Maxson, a Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues finally admitted black players. Troy must deal with his determined football-player son, who has a chance to go so much further than he did, and with his wife, who reevaluates their marriage when Troy comes home with the baby he fathered with another woman. The play deals heavily with an African-American man struggling with racial barriers, betrayal and life's disappointments.

Washington, no stranger to the New York stage, returns to Broadway for the first time since starring in Julius Caesar in 2005. He made his Broadway debut in the 1988 production of Checkmates. His other theatre credits include Richard III, The Mighty Gents, Ceremonies in Dark Old Men, When the Chickens Come Home to Roost. He won an Obie Award for his role in A Soldier's Play. He won two Academy Awards for his performances in "Training Day" and "Glory" and received Oscar nominations for his performances in "The Hurricane," "Malcolm X" and "Cry Freedom." Seeing him on the live stage is definitely an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. The production also stars Davis who won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her performance in August Wilson's King Hedley II. She was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her role in "Doubt." She also appeared in the Broadway production of August Wilson's Seven Guitars where she was nominated for a Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World Awards.

Some of Wilson's other works include Gem of the Ocean, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, The Piano Lesson, Seven Guitars, Two Trains Running, Jitney, King Hedley II and Radio Golf. He also won the Pulitzer Prize for the Piano Lesson in 1990 and Great Britain's Olivier Award for Jitney, as well as eight New York Drama Critics Circle Awards. Fences originally starred James Earl Jones as Troy. The original Broadway production won four Tony Awards including Best Play, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and three Drama Desk Awards, including Best Play and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. It’s certainly a production worth seeing especially if you’ve already seen some of the other plays in the cycle.

The production is on a strictly limited engagement and is scheduled to close on July 11, 2010. So, don’t miss your chance to see this powerful drama unfold with this brilliant and talented cast. The Fences play is currently in previews and tickets are on sale now.
