Finian's Rainbow Tickets - The Great Musical Is Back On Broadway
Finian's Rainbow has returned to Broadway after its last performance in 1960. Finian’s Rainbow is based on a book by Fred Saidy and E.Y. Harburg. The first Broadway production took place in 1947 and the musical was a great hit then. It ran for 725 performances. The 1947 production got three Tony Awards, which included one for the lead actor David Wayne and one for Michael Kidd, the legendary choreographer.
The musical was again revived in 1995 at the City Center. The next Broadway production came in 1960 at the 46th Street Theater. It was again well received by theater goers and Finian's Rainbow tickets once again are a hot seller.
A Unique StoryFinian's Rainbow is a great musical whose story can be classified as part satirical and part romantic. It deals in a very satirical manner the complicated issues of race and class.
The story of this great musical goes something like this. Finian McLonergan, an old Irish gentleman, comes to the mythical town of Rainbow Valley, which is located in a mythical southern state called Missitucky. He arrives here with his daughter Sharon McLonergan. He has stolen a pot of gold from a leprechaun called Og. Finian plans to bury this gold in the shadows of Fort Knox under a mistaken belief that the gold will multiply.
However, instead of the gold multiplying, he has to deal with a burning issue of blossoming romance. He also has to deal with the pesky leprechaun who has followed the father and daughter duo with the goal of retrieving his stolen gold. Finian also has to deal with the credit crisis and a conservative senator.
The musical is unique in the sense that it dealt with the issues of class and race way back in 1947 and perhaps is why Finian's Rainbow tickets are so popular. The character of the bigoted Southern senator who accidentally turns black is one of its kinds. The musical is also noted for featuring a mute character who dances to express herself. This character is of Susan Mahoney, who is played by Alina Faye.
Includes Classical SongsThe musical is well known for its great musical scores. The latest musical Broadway production includes classical songs, like “Old Devil Moon,” “How Are Things In Glocca Morra?”, “If This Isn’t Love,” and “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love (I Love The Girl I’m Near)”.
The lyrics of this musical have been written by the legendary E.Y. Harburg. He has written lyricists for about 500 songs. He is also known for his musical ‘Bloomer Girl’.
CastFinian's Rainbow stars Jim Norton as Finian. Jim Norton has won the Tony and Olivier Awards for his performances in ‘The Seafarer’, and ‘The Weir’. Kate Baldwin stars as Sharon. Her other Broadway credits include ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, ‘The Full Monty’, and ‘Wonderful Town’.
