The revival of Follies Broadway is set for opening night on September 12, 2011. The highly anticipated musical has been subject to mixed reviews, but boasts standard songs with an All-Star cast. This will be the third run for the production on Broadway with the Stephen Sondheim classic playing at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1971. Though the original production closed due to financial problems, it was a hit with audiences and critics. The 1971 debut was nominated for 11 Tony Awards and took home seven. Follies include music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Goldman. It tells the story of a decaying Broadway theatre and the performers who once thrived on its stage. The group decides to hold a reunion before the theatre is demolished and taken down for good. The leading characters are two couples now married Buddy and Sally Durant Plummer and Benjamin and Phyllis Rogers Stone. The women were once the main showgirls for the "Weismann's Follies," a musical revue. Now many years later the couples' struggle within their relationships and are thrown back to relive their past days of glory.
The revival Follies Broadway musical includes many songs, which would later become Broadway standards. Songs such as "Broadway Baby," "I'm Still Here," "Too Many Mornings," "Could I Leave You?" and "Losing My Mind" subsequently would become a huge influence on Broadway theatre. The original production of "Follies" ran for 522 performances before final curtain. The stage show would go onto play London's West End and many regional theatres. In 2001, Follies returned to Broadway at the Belasco Theatre on April 5, 2001. The revival production ran for 117 performances. The revival was directed by Matthew Warchus with stunning choreography by Kathleen Marshall. It starred Blythe Danner (Phyllis), Judith Ivey (Sally), Treat Williams (Buddy), and Gregory Harrison (Benjamin). The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts ran full performances of Follies at the Eisenhower Theatre which opened on May 21, 2011. The production was then transferred to the Marquis Theatre for a limited engagement. The latest Broadway revival of "Follies" stars actors Bernadette Peters, Jan Maxwell, Danny Burstein, Ron Raines in the leading roles.
Follies Broadway is considered a legendary musical by critic's standards. The production, though not a commercial success, has become a somewhat "cult classic" in the genre. While critics remain passionately divided on the musical's greatness, it contains some of Stephen Sondheim's greatest lyrics written.
