Broadway Play (drama)

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

A new fast-paced drama opens on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre this April. This post Watergate play was written by Peter Morgan who has also penned such award-winning films as “The Queen” and “The Last King of Scotland”. Frost/Nixon is a powerful retelling of the most riveting television interviews in modern history. The talented cast of ten is lead by Frank Langella and Michael Sheen who are reprising the roles they originated in the London production.

In 1972 a break in was interrupted at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. Several days later, and much to everyone’s surprise, a connection was made between the intended thieves and the White House; particularly the President’s closest aids. That discovery triggered one of the biggest scandals within the American presidency and ended with the nation’s leader resigning in disgrace. It was considered, at best, a dismal time in American history. This particular piece of history sets the stage for Frost/Nixon. The production is set in 1977 and is based on the interviews between the British talk-show host David Frost and former President Richard M. Nixon. Much of the plot builds to the encounter between the two and the show climaxes with the interviews.

The production’s impressive cast features two actors who come to the stage with much experience. Their diverse and complex work makes them ideal for the roles they portray in this play. Frank Langella, in the role of Nixon, is a two-time Tony Award winner for his work in Seascape in 1975 and Fortunes Fool in 2002. The role of Nixon earned him an Olivier Award nomination in London, and he was last seen on Broadway in the 2004 production of Match for which he was again nominated for a Tony for Best Actor in a Play. In the role of Frost is Michael Sheen a celebrated stage and film actor. He was most recently seen on the big screen as Tony Blair in “The Queen”, and was also nominated for an Olivier Award for his role as Frost in the London production. He was last seen on Broadway as Mozart in Amadeus in 1999.

These interviews for which the play is based upon drew the largest audience ever for a news interview, and this production does a fantastic job of recreating the intense and powerful dialogue between the two men. It also addresses the question of how a playboy British talk-show host with no known political convictions could elicit an apology from a shamed American president who committed one of the biggest felonies in America’s political history. This play tells the true story of a dark and embarrassing time for not only one man, but an entire nation. It portrays material that much of the audience will have lived through, but is definitely worth revisiting, and is also a good opportunity for those too young to have lived this experience to learn about this important part of history. Frost/Nixon is on a twenty week limited engagement and is scheduled to close on August 19, 2007.

Frost Nixon tickets are selling on average for around 65.00 dollars with premium seating costing around 200.00 dollars. For more information or to view all available Frost Nixon Tickets Click the link.
