Godspell the Broadway musical is based on the Gospel as according to St. Matthew. John Michael Tebelak wrote Godspell for his senior thesis, a directing project for Carnegie Mellon University of Fine Arts. The first version of Godspell was performed in 1970. After meeting with Ellen Stewart of Café La MaMa in New York, the show was transferred to La MaMa Experimental Theater Club for a two week period.
It was here that Edgar Landsbury and Joseph Beruh saw the production and they liked what they saw. They approached Tebelak with an off-Broadway production if he would agree to a new score. Tebelak agreed with the proposal and Stephen Schwartz was hired to write the lyrics and music.
Godspell made its first Broadway appearance on June 22, 1976 at the Broadhurst Theatre. its Broadway run was as successful as its five years off-Broadway run. After giving 527 sold out performances, the show finally ended its Broadway run on September 4, 1977.

The musical deals with the last days of Jesus. The parables are illustrated with the use of contemporary themes. The song “Day by Day” reached the number 13th spot on the Billboard Top 100 list.
The latest Broadway run will feature Gavin Creel as Jesus and Joshua Henry as Judas. Creel has received a Tony nomination for his role in “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Recently, he was seen in the London production of “Mary Poppins” in which he played Bert, the chimney sweep. Diana DeGarmo of the “American Idol” fame is also being cast for the musical.
