Godspell The Musical
ACCLAIMED MUSICAL RETURNS TO BROADWAY AFTER 30 YEARS!
This classic musical based on the Gospel according to Matthew returns to Broadway with previews beginning on September 29, 2008 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre with an official start date of October 23, 2008. This revival of Godspell is a modern update to the original that will bring the show into the 21st Century by using fresh musical arrangements, precise stage direction and splendid set designs. It is a new twist on Christ’s teachings that will have a whole new generation singing its praises!
Godspell, an archaic spelling of the word gospel, is a story based on the parables taken from the Gospel of Matthew. The show is ultimately a reflection of the life and times of Jesus Christ that is not built around a particular plot. It is a unique show that uses varies devices such as pantomime, charades, clowns, vaudeville and acrobatics to tell this intriguing tale.
The production first took Broadway audiences by storm in 1976 after it had enjoyed a successful off-Broadway run and a popular film featuring Victor Garber in the role of Jesus. The book was written by John-Michael Telelak with music and lyrics by Academy Award and Grammy winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked). While the musical features songs that are based in parables the production uses many contemporary themes to get the point across. The score has several popular songs from the original show and uses pop, folk, gospel and vaudeville to bring the characters and story to life. “Day By Day” from the original cast recording reached number thirteen on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972 bridging the gap between the “Broadway musical” and what kids were actually listening to at the time.
In the current production Gavin Creel plays the role of Jesus. Creel most recently played the role of Burt in the West End’s production of Mary Poppins. He was last seen on Broadway as Jean-Micheal in the 2004 production of La Cage aux Folles. He was nominated for a Tony award in 2002 for his Broadway debut performance in Thoroughly Modern Millie. His experience and enthusiasm should make for a very entertaining and enlightening performance.
Godspell was a phenomenal production in the seventies that changed the way people viewed theater in that era. Now it is being updated and revived for a whole new group of theatergoers. The cast, the music and the story will have audiences leaving the show wanting to see it again.
