The Good People Broadway play written by David Lindsay-Abaire is getting much positive attention. This is the first new play for Broadways 2011 season and truly delivers. A wonderful mix of thought-provoking ideas, glowing humor and fantastic characters bring the show to life on the stage. Fitting for the times, the story tells of the divide between those struggling to make ends meet and those who have gone on to success. Opening on March 3, 2011 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, the show's closing has been extended to run through May 8.
American playwright and lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire is most known for his 2007 Broadway production of "Rabbit Hole." His work went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and several Tony Award nominations. His latest well received work on "Good People" brings former collaborator, Daniel Sullivan onto direct an amazing cast of talent. Oscar winner Frances McDormand takes the lead role playing the middle-aged Margie Walsh. Television star Tate Donovan plays Mike. The self made doctor who could escape the poor South Boston Neighborhood in which Margie is stuck. Estelle Parsons is a real treat in the show and provides some of the greatest comedic moments playing Margie's neighbor.
Good People Broadway brings the audience into the world of a small Boston area called "Southie." A typical American town filled with hard working middle-class barley capable of hanging on. Working and jobs available none of them seem to be able and cover the bills. Living month to month and always a few months behind is common routine. Margie Walsh finds herself let go from another job and facing eviction. She finds an old boyfriend and realizes perhaps he may be her one-way ticket out of "Southie" for good. Of course the "self made" doctor Mike has his own troubles with his humbling beginnings in Southie. The struggles, divided loyalties and pursing dreams are all tested with though-provoking care and a humorous glow.
The World Premier was mounted by the playwright's longtime home of the Manhattan Theatre Club. Since the plays opening reviews have been extremely positive. The six member ensemble cast delivers top-notch performances that are sure to be talked about for some time. Mr. Lindsay-Abaire has a perfect understanding of the South Boston idiom as well as the struggles and perseverance of his characters. He can provide a rich storyline steeped in deep ideas but brimming with humor. Good People Broadway tickets are sure to be a huge hit at the box office during the plays limited Broadway run.
