If you are in the mood for some rock and roll music, this one is is made just for you. It is a fine depiction of the teen pop culture of the 1950’s. This musical has gone beyond the boundaries of tradition and given the first rock and roll music of its kind in the history of musicals. It has managed to become an archetypal in its own way.

A Humble Effort: A Grand Success

It was 1972 when “Grease” first entered the world of Broadway shows and this lasted up to 1980, it becoming the longest running Broadway musical ever. It would have run longer than this had the play “A Chorus Line” not taken over. The musical was originally of a five hour duration. It was staged under the backdrop of a garage in Chicago and starred all amateur actors.

“Grease” saw a stunning success with all its tickets sold out in Chicago. Its success drew the attention of famous Broadway producers Maxine Fox and Ken Waissman. They convinced Jacobs and Casey, the mastermind behind “Grease”, to run their musical in New York.

In New York, this mesmerizing musical was shown as a two-hour show at the Eden Theater close to Broadway. Richard Gere, John Travolta, and Patrick Swayze have been a part of the Broadway cast. The musical soon gripped the entire New York in frenzy and grabbed 7 Tony awards!

Even today, this record-breaking musical draws audience just like before all over America and outside. It has been shown at London’s Cambridge Theater and in theaters across Canada and America.

The Movie

The Broadway musical was such a hit that it was made into a movie, which starred Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. Ian Kelsey, Brooke Shields, Stacey Gregg, Craig Maclachlan, and Paul Nicholas have also starred in this terrific musical.

The story of “Grease” revolves around two rebellious teens of the 50’s. Dann Zucko and Sandra Dee meet during summer after school and have a romantic affair at the beach. After school opens, both of them join the same high school. This is where the story takes a turn.

Danny shows his true colors. He is a popular, chilled out guy with sizzling styles. Now, it’s up to Sandy, who is portrayed as a morally upright young lady, to take a decision whether to continue loving Dann or not.

As the story is interwoven in a love affair, it’s got some terrific romantic as well as dance numbers. The classics like ‘Summer Nights’, ‘Beauty School Dropout’, ‘Greased Lightinin’, and ‘Could Do’ are fabulous. The music has been composed by Jacobs and Casey. The amazing choreography has been done by Patricia Birch.
