AUDIENCES ARE HOPELESSLY DEVOTED!This highly anticipated revival has finally come back to Broadway! The fresh spin on a classic show opened in July 2007 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The production began with much fanfare as the leads were cast in a Broadway twist via the NBC reality television show “You’re The One That I Want”. The two winners currently ended their run and now the runners up from that reality show have stepped into the roles of star-crossed lovers Danny and Sandy. The production is set in 1959 at Rydell High School. Grease is an all American musical that deals with such social issues as being in the “in” crowd and teen pregnancy. The story focuses on the rambunctious gang the T-Birds and their sassy counterparts the Pink Ladies. The leader of the T-Birds, Danny Zuko, has just come back from summer vacation where he has had a whirlwind romance with the innocent Sandy Dumbrowski. To Danny’s surprise Sandy shows up as the new girl at Rydell and much to Sandy’s shock the smart talking gang leader is nothing like the sweet boy she left at the beach. The show takes the audience through a high energy, fun loving senior year at Rydell High. This classic production has been revised and kicked into high gear for a whole new crop of fans. The dancing, music, set and costumes will not disappoint even the most avid Grease fan. The score includes “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightning” and “We Go Together” from the original Broadway production as well as several songs made famous by the 1978 movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John including “Sandy” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. The production is being choreographed and directed by Tony award winner Kathleen Marshall of The Pajama Game. Ms. Marshall was also a judge on the reality series that chose the new Danny and Sandy. The original Broadway production opened in June of 1972 and enjoyed a successful run of 3,388 performances. The book, lyrics and music are by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Mr. Jacobs was also a judge on the reality show “You’re The One That I Want”. Barry Bostwick and Carole Demas were the original love birds Danny and Sandy. Replacements for various roles throughout the run included Jeff Conaway, Marilu Henner, Patrick Swayze, John Travolta and Treat Williams. Conaway and Travolta went on to play Kenickie and Danny respectively in the film. The 1972 production was nominated for seven Tony awards and won a Drama Desk award for Best Choreography. Grease is a musical comedy that deals with such universal themes as love, friendship and teen rebellion. The story relays the timeless message that we are all trying to fit in and ultimately want to find our place in life. Past fans will enjoy this just as much as they did the first time around and this revival will introduce the T-Birds and the Pink Ladies to a whole new generation of theatergoers who are sure to fall in love especially in this “High School Musical” era. There is no doubt that this show has the potential to become the next smash hit of Broadway … why it’s Greased Lightning!
