Grey Gardens is a musical based on the real life story of two women - mother-daughter eccentrics Edith Ewing Bouvier and Edith Bouvier Beale, popularly known as Big Edie and ‘Little’ Edie. The musical has been adapted from a full length documentary by the same name. The Michael Grief directed, Jeff Calhoun choreographed musical has music by Scott Frankel, lyrics by Michael Korie, and starring in the lead roles are Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson. Though the show opened to good reviews at the Playwrights Horizons in New York City in February 2006, the musical previewed on Broadway on October 3, 2006 at the Walter Kerr Theater, and opened on November 2, 2006. The Musical
Grey Gardens was the estate of Edith Ewing Bouvier, the eccentric aunt of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The musical is the incredible story of these outrageous relatives of Jackie Kennedy, who were once the brightest names in the social register, and who became notorious recluses, spending their time in East Hampton’s dilapidated 28 room mansion – Grey Gardens.
The musical is set in two eras. One, when the estate was in its prime in 1941, and next when it fell to complete disrepair and squalor, in 1973. For over 20 years, the mother-daughter duo lived in abject poverty and squalor, until their condition was exposed in an article in a newspaper. The show is both a hilarious and a heartbreaking story of these two women – beautifully performed on the stage of Broadway by Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson.
Christine Ebersole plays mother Edith Bouvier Beale in Act 1 and daughter ‘Little’ Edie in Act 2. Mary Louise Wilson plays mother Edith in Act 2. For her roller coaster of an emotional performance, Christine Ebersole won 5 awards for her dual performances in Grey Gardens:
A Drama Desk Award
Outer Critics Circle Award
New York Drama Critics Circle’s special citation
Drama League’s 2006 Distinguished Performance of the Year Award
Plans are afoot to convert this moving story into a feature film written and directed by Michael Sucsy, and starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. The Theater

The renovations included restoring the interior to its original colors, designs and lighting.
The Walter Kerr Theater is not fully wheelchair accessible, with wheelchair seating available in the orchestra section only. The theater does not provide assistance within it. Wheelchair accessible restroom is available on the orchestra level. The Tickets
