With the Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls musical theater lovers are going to have another great show to look forward to. Frank Loesser’s hilarious musical about two New York couples has vowed audiences ever since it first debuted in 1950.

Broadway Appearances

The Guys and Dolls musical has given great performance whenever it played. During its first Broadway run, it gave a total of 1200 performances. So far it has had three revivals with a total of 1397 Broadway performances.

The musical was such a hit that a film version was made in 1955. It starred Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Vivian Blaine, and Jean Simmons.

The Book

The book, Guys and Dolls was adopted by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows from “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure,” both of which are short stories written by Damon Runyon. Runyon’s short stories are known for their brilliant accounts and interesting characters.


The music and lyrics of Guys and Dolls musical are penned by Frank Loesser. Its various songs fit in perfectly and in a humorous way with the story line. For instance, the song “Fatigue for Tinhorns” is essentially a debate between Nicely-Nicely Johnson, Rusty Charlie and Benny Southstreet over which horse will win the race. The song is hilarious and a realistic presentation of the ways gamblers use their inside information to win.

There are some great scores in Guys and Dolls. “Follow the Fold,” “The Oldest Established,” “Adelaide’s Lament” and “Luck, Be a Lady” are some of the great songs that audiences have loved ever since the musical made its first Broadway debut.


Guys and Dolls musical has always been received well by critics and audiences. No wonder that it has won so many awards over the years.

It also won the 1992 Drama Desk Award under the category of Outstanding Actor in a Musical (Nathan Lane), Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Faith Prince), Outstanding Costumes, Outstanding Set Design, Outstanding Revival, Outstanding Director of a Musical, and Outstanding Lighting Design.

The original cast of Guys and Dolls musical included Vivian Blaine, Robert Alda, Sam Levene, Isabel Bigley, Pat Rooney Sr., and Jonny Silver.

Guns and Dolls is a story of Nathan Detroit, who is into hosting floating craps games. His fiancé of 14 years, Miss Adelaide, has tried so often to get him to reform his ways but to no avail. The antics of Nathan Detroit and his motley crew have enchanted audiences for several decades.
