Guys and Dolls is a classic Broadway production that has been brought back to life last month at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre, New York.

A Brief History

Tony Award’s winner, Frank Loesser penned down the lyrics and the music for this play. The musical owes its origin to a book called ‘The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown.’ Written by Damon Runyon, this book was published in 1933.

This play went ahead to win the Tony Award in five different categories – Best Director, Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Actor and Best Actress award. Robert Alda and Isabel Bigley won the awards for the Best Actor and Best Actress respectively in 1951.

Main Plot And Interesting Facts

The play’s plot is gambling circles of 1940s along with salvation-army characters and nightclub scenarios. The plot revolves around a gambler called Nathan Detroit who is hunting a place to set up his new floating crap game. For $1000 he can have Biltmore Garage to run his plan. Detroit includes Sky Masterson in his plan and makes a $1000 bet with Masterson - a prominent gambler himself. Nathan’s bet is based on a condition that Masterson must fly a woman of his choice to dinner in Cuba. The woman that Detroit points his finger at is Sergeant Sarah Brown, a member of ‘Save a Soul’- a mission opposed to gambling.

Though difficult for Masterson, he tries to lure Sergeant Brown by convincing her that he is trying to turn over a new leaf. He promises to deliver one dozen sinners to her if she consents to have dinner with him in his chosen restaurant. Sarah, who desperately wants sinner-confessions at her mission branch, agrees to the condition.

The rest of the plot revolves around Nathan and his love interest, Adelaide - a singer at a nightclub. The plot has a happy ending with Nathan marrying Adelaide and Sky and Brown getting united.

Interesting facts come to light regarding the backstage production of the musical, owing to some confessions made by the actors. For instance, Bigley who performed as Sarah Brown in the play wrote a write-up stating how lyric writer, Frank Loesser abused her during the production.
