March 27, 2008 saw history being created at St. James Theatre when Gypsy musical show on Broadway was opened to theatre fans! This is the same show that is regarded as one of the greatest musicals ever produced in America!

Premiered on March 3, Gypsy musical is a story based on a prominent striptease artist of yesteryears, Gypsy Rose Lee. The Routh Frankel Baruch Viertel Group and Roger Berlind have come together to produce this fantastic musical on Broadway. Performing onstage are famous artists like Patti Lupone, who is a stage legend; Laura Benanti, who has given many terrific performances before; and Boyd Gaines, who has many awards to her credit.

There’s a stage mother, Mama Rose. She has two daughters, June and Louise. Just like any other mother, Mama Rose has high aspirations for her daughters. She wants them to achieve the heights of stardom. Her daughters, too, wish that their mother settle down with their stage manager, Herbie. However, fate has something else in store for them. Their act is shown at a wrong place, burlesque house, by mistake and Louise is compelled to become a striptease artist. Watch the expression on the face of Mama Rose when she sees her daughter become Gypsy Rose Lee, the striptease artist who shoots to fame!

Numbers like “Let Me Entertain You”, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, and “Together Wherever We Go” have such powerful lyrics and music that they’ll stir your heart! These songs are the creative products of Jule Styne, who has composed the music, and Stephen Sondheim, who has given the lyrics.

In 1962, a movie was made of this musical. It created the same sensation as this Broadway show. The movie had Karl Malden, Natalie Wood, and Rosalind Russell as the star cast. Gypsy musical was originally produced in the year 1959. Ethel Merman and Jack Klugman were the show stealers at that time. The show was given a Tony Award for the Best Revival in 1989.

Now, in 2008, the musical is here once again to entertain the audience and stun them with a breathtaking stage show. Everyone loves Gypsy musical. Or, you can say everyone loves Gypsy Rose Lee! That’s why tickets to this show are vanishing within minutes at the box office! Almost the entire city wants to see the heart rendering story of a mother and her two daughters. Besides, the show also depicts how fate sometimes takes a twist and not everything goes as we plan.
