Broadway Musical

When Hair made its debut on Broadway in 1968, it was a smash hit. American audiences had seen nothing like it before; the show was irreverent, funny, tragic, and heroic - all at the same time. It addressed the issues facing the flower power generation - Vietnam, racism, discrimination, sex, drugs in a cool, rock 'n roll style. Hair Broadway musical ran on Broadway for five years, took a five-year hiatus, and was back in 1977, though not on Broadway. It made stars out of its cast, music composers, and director. Songs such as "Good Morning Sunshine" and "Aquarius", composed by Gerome Ragni and James Rado (they were also part of the cast), were runaway hits. The characters or "tribe" as they were affectionately called - Berger, Sheila, Claude, Crissy, Hud - each had something to say to the audience. It was because of this strong identification of the audience with the characters that the musical became such an instant hit.

In 2009, Hair Broadway musical is back where it all started - at Broadway. The message still resonates with people because there is a lot of discrimination, violence, and moral dilemmas that young people face even today. Losing yourself in a hashish-driven rapture is not cool anymore, long hair is too clichéd, leather is too loud a statement, and anti-establishment elements remain on the fringes post 9/11 and subsequent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the essential problems that young people face remain the same.

Join The Tribe

Hair has no pretensions to high art - it is very much part of the audience. The cast members interact with the audience and draw people up on stage to dance with them. While some of the issues addressed in Hair Broadway musical make it unsuitable for a family outing, it is a perfect show if you plan to go out with your partner or friends for a fun evening. And yeah, it's perfectly okay to sing and dance along!
