Even though the hit show Hairspray premiered on August 15th 2002, the Hairspray musical tickets are still very much in demand. The musical is an adaptation of the 1988 movie of the same name directed by John Waters.

Hairspray is set in 1962 in Baltimore. It is the story of an overweight girl Tracy Turnblad (Marissa Perry), whose ambition is to dance on the TV dance show, the Corny Collins Show and to win the heart of Link Larkin (Ashley Parker Angel).

When she does get a chance to perform on the show, the producer of the show rejects her. Tracy does not give up. She learns a few dance steps from her friend Seaweed and astounds the show host Corny Collins (Clark Thorell). She wins a spot on the show. From an outcast, she transforms into a star in her own right. The story touches upon the racial discrimination faced by the black people in the 1960s. The whites and the blacks dance separately on the show. At the end of the show, Tracy manages to bring an end to the segregation of the dancers and also wins over Link Larkin.

The cast and crew of the musical perform their parts marvelously. Jack O’Brien has directed Hairspray. Marc Shaiman has composed the lively music, which is reminiscent of the 1960s era. He has won a Grammy and a Tony Award for his music. He has also written the lyrics along with Scott Wittman. One of the highlights of the show is the romantic song “Timeless to Me” which is a duet between Tracy’s mother (George Wendt) and father (Ken Marks). Jerry Mitchell has choreographed the dances. He has taken care to include almost all the styles of dances of the 1960s. The dances are energetic and fun. The vibrant sets, designed by David Rockwell, and costumes and hairstyle by William Ivey Long and Paul Huntley respectively take us back to the Baltimore of the 60s. The Lighting Design is by Kenneth Posner.

The musical has won several awards including 8 Tony Awards, 7 Drama Desk awards, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for the Best Musical as well as the Drama League Award for Distinguished Production of a Musical. It has also won three Outer Critics' Circle awards. Simultaneously, it also has got tremendous rave reviews from its audience. No wonder that Hairspray musical tickets are still so popular.
