Neil Simon Theater History
Dateline 1962 and the place – Baltimore, Maryland. This production brings on stage at Broadway, the style of the 1960s. Bright colors, and big hairdos, fabulously piled high upon the heads of the actors. The foot tapping and head-nodding musical, reminiscent of the 1960s - is based on John Waters’ 1988 cult film by the same name. This Jack O’Brien directed and Jerry Mitchell choreographed musical previewed at the Nederlander owned and operated Neil Simon Theater on July 18, 2002, and after a total of 31 previews, opened on August 2, 2002. As of November 19, 2006, Hairspray has had a total of 1,776 well-accepted performances.
Hairspray was nominated for 13 categories of the Tony Awards in 2003, and won eight of them. These were for:
Best Musical
Best Book of a Musical
Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) Written for the Theatre
Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Harvey Fierstein)
Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Marissa Jaret Winokur)
Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical (Dick Latessa)
Best Costume Design
Best Direction of a Musical
With seven Tony Awards, a Grammy Award, and more than four years under its belt, the musical is still a great hit on Broadway. And why not? The legendary Harvey Fierstein in drag! (later replaced by Michael McKean), the get-up-and-dance foot tapping music, integration and the end of racial ‘innocence,’ interracial romance, all combine to make this hit New York show appeal to the musical theater buffs.
The Background
Before Hairspray came to New York City in 2002, the stage adaptation of the film was first presented at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. This is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a girl with a dream to dance on the local TV dance program - Corny Collins Show. This dance program is based on the real life Buddy Dean Show of Baltimore.
Tracy Turnblad gets her chance and becomes a celebrity overnight, and then launches a campaign to racially integrate the Corny Collins Show.
The musical – Hairsparay is now going back from where it came. Though the 1988 film had music in it, it was not a musical. Now this popular Broadway musical is being re-adapted as a musical film, with John Travolta in drag as Edna Turnblad – mother of Tracy Turnblad!
