The venue was known as the Manhattan Opera House when it first opened in 1906 – one hundred years ago. It was built by Oscar Hammerstein to take on the well-established Metropolitan Opera by introducing cheaper seats for the ordinary New Yorkers. This rapidly became an alternative venue for many celebrated singers and operas. With the passage of time, operas lost their sheen and this magnificent Opera House - with a two-tier auditorium - served as avenue for radio broadcasts, recordings, performances, mundane union meetings, and trade shows.
In 1990s, starting with the audio recording and the video post production facilities, and by 1997, the concert hall underwent restoration to its former glory. Today, concerts, fashion shows, live TV events and much more transpire here on a regular basis.

When the 12,000 square feet Hammerstein Ballroom stood against the established Metropolitan Opera as an alternative venue, the Metropolitan, not being able to stand the competition, offered Hammerstein $1.2 million in 1910 to stop producing operas for the next 10 years. He accepted the offer, and later sold the building to Schubert brothers in 1911.
Still known as the Manhattan Opera House, it provided entertainment featuring vaudeville shows during the week and concerts on Sunday nights. In 1922, the Opera House was purchased by the Freemasons, who built a new façade, and The Grand Ballroom on the 7th floor. For the film Don Juan, the Warner Brothers in 1926, set up a new sound system to capture the 107-piece New York Philharmonic orchestra.
The name changed to the Manhattan Center in 1940, and through the following decades there were performance by the great performers, such as Paul Robeson, Harry Belafonte, Perry Como, Leonard Bernstein, The Grateful Dead and Bob Marley.
To be able to host multimedia events, Manhattan Center Studios was formed in 1986, and nine studios were added, over time, for audio recording and the video postproduction facilities. The classic venue has seen performances from a number of musical acts, such as Korn, Oasis, Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, Incubus, Guns N' Roses, Avenged Sevenfold, the Beastie Boys, No Doubt, PJ Harvey, Iron Maiden, Ashlee Simpson, The Pixies, and Shoshana Bean, among may others.
