Hedda Gabler
TONY AWARD WINNING CAST!Roundabout Theatre Company presents the revival of a stage classic. Hedda Gabler begins previews at the American Airlines Theatre on January 6, 2009 with an official start date scheduled for January 25, 2009. The production about an independent woman who takes on a husband with dire consequences stars Tony award winners Mary Louise Parker and Michael Cerveris. In Henrik Ibsen’s play newlywed Hedda realizes that she has made a terrible mistake by marrying her scholar husband George. Her boredom causes her to embark in a dangerous game that sets in motion a path of destruction to those around her. Relationships are ruined and some lived will never be the same once she is finished. The role of Hedda is said to be one of the great dramatic roles in theater and this character is often described as the female Hamlet. At times the play becomes very tragic and has several underlying dark themes. The play takes place in a villa in 1890’s Norway. This drama has been seen throughout the world over the past century and has been recognized as a classic of 19th century theatre. The play was originally published in 1890 and made its Broadway debut in 1902 becoming a Broadway sensation. Over the years the role of Hedda has been played by many noteworthy and successful actresses including Ingrid Bergman, Kate Mulgrew, Kelly McGillis, Annette Benning and Judy Davis. In the current production Parker takes a crack at the title role. She is best known for her Tony award winning work in the 2001 production of Proof. She can currently be seen in the hit Showtime series Weeds in her Emmy nominated role of Nancy. The production also stars Michael Cerveris who won a Tony award in 2004 for his portrayal of John Wilkes Booth in Assassins. He was also nominated the following year for his work in the title role of Sweeny Todd. He was last seen on Broadway in the 2007 production of Cymbeline. This very talented ensemble only enhances an already powerful and moving storyline. Hedda Gabler is an interesting period piece that depicts the life of a privileged, bored woman who uses those around her to fill the void that her married life has caused. It is a poignant production of wealth, power and deceit that shouldn’t be missed. Ring in the new year with this one but don’t wait too long as it is on a limited engagement and is scheduled to close on March 29, 2009.
