POWERFUL TRUE STORY!

Uplifting true story comes to Broadway this spring and tells the story of a brave woman who was determined to defy the odds. Irena’s Vow opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on March 29, 2009 and is currently scheduled to run as an open ended production. This new play was written by Dan Gordon who describes his work as “Ann Frank with a happy ending.”

The play is set during World War II during the German occupation of Poland. Irina, a Polish Catholic woman, was forced to work as the head housekeeper for a prominent Nazi major. During her two years of service she secretly saved the lives of twelve Jewish refugees who she took under her wing and hid them in the basement during the Holocaust. She risked her own life each and every day that she cared for these people. She has been described as one of the most courageous and unsung heroines of the era.

In the title role is the amazing and talented Tovah Feldshuh who is probably best known for her Tony nominated role of Golda Meir in Golda’s Balcony. She made her Broadway debut in the 1973 production of Cyrano and has also received Tony nods for her work in Yentl, Sarava and Lend Me a Tenor. She also performed the role of Irina in last year’s successful off-Broadway production. She gives a powerhouse performance that is definitely worthy of a Tony nomination. The cast also features Sandi Carroll, Tracee Chimo and Steven Havck. Gordon is currently writing a screen adaptation of the play but unlike the play the movie would feature two actresses in the title role; a younger and older version.

This is an engrossing story of hope and faith and should not be missed. Come see why the NY Daily News said, “A gripping play! An amazing story! Tovah Feldshuh is dynamic and powerful!” The show runs for an hour and thirty minutes and features no intermission.
