Shawn Corey Carter a.k.a Jay-Z (born on 4.12.1969) had a humble beginning in the music world. He was born and brought-up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Jay-Z traded school-life with a life of drug dealing and so dropped out of school early. However, he mended his ways and followed his passion in music. Then, Jay-Z, Kareem Biggs and Damon Dash together went on to create their own record label “Roc-A-Fella Records” at a time when they were not offered record deals by any the major record labels. Jay-Z later went on to release his debut album in 1996 titled “Reasonable Doubt” which reached the 23rd position on the Billboard Chart 200 and at No. 3 on the US R&B Charts. However, the album received strong critical reviews and went on to achieve platinum status.

Jay-Z went on to release his third record ‘Vol.2 Criminal Charges’ in 1998. The following year saw the release of ‘Vol.3 Life and Times of S. Carter’ – his fourth album. These albums made Jay-Z, a mainstream hit maker.
