Jesus Christ Superstar tickets first sold for Broadway in 1971. The production was staged as a new rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice. The collaboration was originally slated as a "rock opera concept recording," before being staged as a musical. The original album featured the lead singer of heavy rock band "Deep Purple," Ian Gillan singing the parts of Jesus with Judas by Murray Head. The album differed from the eventual musical; it contained much hard music styling's and a classically based genre. The album would eventually lead to a concert in front of an audience of 13,000 in Pittsburgh on July 11, 1971. Later, that same year on October 12, Jesus Christ Superstar tickets sold for the Broadway premier. The musical opened to very mixed reviews with Tom O'Horgan as director, at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the last week of Jesus's life. The story mainly begins with the arrival of Jesus and his Disciples to Jerusalem and ends with the Crucifixion. The story's main focus is on Judas Iscariot and the interpreted political struggles between himself and Jesus. The events of the story stay true to the written word of the Bible, while the emotions of the characters are left to explore with free interpretation. The musical, emotional and factual exploration left the work open to heavy criticisms from religious groups and churches. Jesus Christ Superstar as been revived and appeared every decade since its conception around the world, including the West End and Broadway. A film adaptation even found great commercial success in 1973. Songs include "I Don't Know How to Love Him," The Last Supper," and the title song "Superstar." The 2012 revival of this "classic" rock opera features a talented cast which includes Paul Nolan, Josh Young and Chilina Kennedy. The revival is directed by Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys) with choreography by Lisa Shriver. Jesus Christ Superstar tickets are now on sale for all performances at the Neil Simon Theatre.
