Come And Gone - Show Description

Joe Turners Come and Gone review can best be described as a journey of self-discovery. The play first premiered in 1988 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. Today this enduring tale of the children of the recently freed slaves has yet again arrived at a theater near you. Now playing at the Belasco Theater, Come and Gone is a story of the timeless journey of Herald Loomis who along with his daughter heads north searching for his wife. They both end up in a Pittsburgh boarding house where Loomis learns new ways of self-reliance.

The boarding house is run by Seth and Bertha Holly and most of the action on stage takes place in their kitchen. Bertha and Seth look after their lodgers when both Loomis and his young daughter Zonia arrive on stage. They are there only for a short stay while on their way to search for Zonia’s mother. The play moves on with Bynum who is a miraculous root worker and the rest of the boarding house members, easing Harold’s quest for his wife. The search that can be called a tale of triumph and perseverance, ultimately leads to the awakening of his soul.

The play is directed by Tony Award winner Barlett Sher. Lincoln Center Theater is the production in charge and the playwright credentials go to August Wilson. Every performer of the play is a pleasure to watch. In fact so smooth and convincing are their dialogues that you like a part of the warm kitchen owned by Bertha and Seth. One can easily say that it is after a long time that Broadway is seeing such an eternal tale of heart and soul.
