Broadway Play (Drama)

The Lincoln Center presents August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at the Belasco Theatre on April 16, 2009. This is the second play in Wilson’s ten play cycle depicting African American life in each decade of the 20th century. This show is currently in previews and will be running on an eight week limited engagement.

The play is set in 1911 and tells the story of Herald Loomis who after serving seven years of hard labor travels north with his young daughter. They take up residence at a Pittsburgh boarding house that is filled with memorable characters that help him in his search for a new life. The production depicts everyday life for the residents of the boarding house. It chronicles a very distinct time in American history especially for African Americans. Its major themes include discrimination, migration and identity. The language of the play reflects the dialogue of the place and time in history for which the play is set. Many of the characters display a certain sense of spirituality and are firm in their religious beliefs,

The play was written by two time Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Wilson who’s other works include Fences (1985) and The Piano Lesson (1990) both of which won him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Come and Gone originally debuted in 1988 and was nominated for a Tony award and won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. The revival is being directed by Tony award winning director Barlett Sher who also directed the Lincoln Centers other current revival of South Pacific. Featured in the cast is an eclectic and talented ensemble including Marsha Stephanie Blake (The Crucible), Chad L. Coleman (Two Trains Running) and Aunjanue Ellis (The Tempest).

While this is the second play in a cycle each play is designed to stand alone and can certainly be seen without seeing the other nine. It is a very good series that serves to educate a new generation. It is also a good reminder of how far this country has come especially in the last couple of decades. The play is on a limited run and is scheduled to close on June 14, 2009. Don’t miss your chance to experience an uplifting and powerful play about human experiences and how far some bonds can take us.
