La Cage aux Folles Tickets
Kelsey Grammer stars in popular Broadway revival…The acclaimed Broadway production, La Cage aux Folles, returns to NYC at the Longacre Theatre on April 18, 2010. The much anticipated production stars Olivier Award winner Douglas Hodge as Albin, a drag performer with a heart of gold, and stage and screen star Kelsey Grammer as his partner Georges. This reworked production of the classic musical comes to Broadway following successful runs at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory and in the West End. It was nominated for seven 2009 Olivier Awards, winning for Best Musical Revival and Best Actor in a Musical for Douglas Hodge. It won the 2009 Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Best Musical.
The story centers in on Georges, a suave owner of a glitzy drag club on the French Riviera. His high strung romantic partner, Albin, is a performer in his club. The pair lives a charmed life, until Georges’ son, Jean-Michel, turns up engaged to the daughter of a conservative right-wing politician who’s coming to dinner. Can the two pull this off? What can possibly go wrong? The play is based on a French play and movie and shows the ins and outs of a longtime, devoted marriage that shaken to its core by a son's choice of fiancée. The marriage is between Albin — alias Zaza, a drag queen — and Georges, who had a one-night stand with a woman that resulted in the birth of the son to whom the men are both passionately devoted. Now their son is in love with a nice girl whose father happens to be a local who is hell-bent on closing down Georges' nightclub and silencing his star, the drag queen Zaza.
La Cage aux Folles features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret. The amazing score features the classic songs, "I Am What I Am" and "The Best of Times” This "freshly reconceived production" is choreographed by Lynne Page and directed by Terry Johnson. Five time Emmy award winning actor Grammar, who is best known for his popular sitcom role, Frasier Crane, will open the show in the role of Georges and then in six months he’ll switch to the role of Albin. Classical stage actor Douglas Hodge makes his Broadway debut in the role of Albin where he had a successful run on the west End.
The original production debuted on Broadway in 1983 and ran for four years to critic’s raves and audiences delight. It also took home a Tony Award that year. It had a successful transfer to the West End and has earned a rightful place in Broadways colorful history. The show is currently an open-ended production, but if you want your chance to see this spectacular opening cast, get your La Cage aux Folles tickets soon.
