Les Liaisons Dangereuses
DARK COMEDY RETURNS!Roundabout Theatre Company’s presentation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses is scheduled to begin previews at the American Airlines Theatre on April 11, 2008 with an official start date of May 1, 2008. This dark comedy about seduction and betrayal is based on the French novel by Choderlos de Luclos published in 1872. The production stars film and stage actress Laura Linney in the role of the manipulative Maequise de Merteuil. The play takes place just before the French Revolution and centers on two fierce rivals and occasional lovers; Madame Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont. Each strives for a greater love and are in a position to help each other achieve success through deception, lies and betrayals. Together they create confusion and cause damage among the aristocracy while trying to obtain the unobtainable. They not only use each other but who ever is around them as well while being cruel and calculating in the process. In the end things are not what they had originally hoped for and they may find out that they truly deserve one another. The play was written by Christopher Hampton and premiered on Broadway in 1987 starring Lindsay Duncan and Alan Rickman both of whom earned a Tony nomination for their performances. Hampton went on to win an Academy Award for his screenplay adaptation Dangerous Liaisons which was released in 1988 and starred Glen Close and John Malkovich in the roles of the twisted lovers. If this story feels familiar it may be because it seems to be a favorite in terms of movies both in the United States and abroad. Some of the other interpretations include Valmont (1989), Cruel Intentions (1999), and Untold Scandals (2003). In this current revival accomplished stage and screen actress Laura Linney stars opposite Ben Daniels. Linney has received Tony award nominations for her roles in The Crucible and Sight Unseen. She won an Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie in 2002 for her work in Wild Iris. She was also recognized with Oscar nominations for her roles in The Savage, You Can Count on Me and Kinsey. This talented and seasoned actress has appeared in many films including Mystic River, Love Actually and The Nanny Diaries. Making his Broadway debut in the role of Valmont is Daniels. He has had much success on the London stage in several productions including Three Sisters, All My Sons and The Wild Duck. Les Liaisons Dangereuses is an unforgettable tale of lies, mistrust and cruel intentions. It portrays two wicked people and details the lengths they will go to just to get what they want. This production is on a limited engagement and is set to close on June 29, 2008.
