Fall is Football Season on Broadway, too!

"People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses or the problems of modern society." - Vince Lombardi, inspirational coach of the Green Bay Packers football team (and Brooklyn native).

LOMBARDI, based on the life of the inspirational coach, comes to the Circle in the Square Theatre for previews in September, but is scheduled to open officially on October 21, 2010. The production brings the audience into the life and times of legendary Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi who is often referred to as one of America's most moving icons in modern history. This new play by Academy Award winner and Steppenwolf Theater Company member Eric Simonson, is based on the best-selling biography When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss.

The play takes the audience into the life and times of this well known coach and shows just how he became the man who eventually went on to lead one of the most successful teams in the NFL. He was probably one of the greatest football coaches of all time. His ability to teach, motivate and inspire players helped turn the Green Bay Packers into the most dominating NFL team in the 1960s. The production takes us into an era where America was on the verge of change, but still had a small town, simpler feel to life. Lombardi is famous for inspiring not just his players, but mostly everyone he came in contact with for coming up with life altering statements such as, “Winning isn’t everything, but the will to win is everything.”

The production starts well-known television stars Dan Lauria (The Wonder Years) and Judith Light (Who’s the Boss and Ugly Betty) as Vince and Marie Lombardi. The cast also features Keith Nobbs as Michael McCormick, Bill Dawes as Paul Hornung, Robert Christopher Riley as Dave Robinson and Chris Sullivan as Jim Taylor. The show is being directed by Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail (In the Heights) and the National Football League is one of the production's producers.

Vince Lombardi (1913-1970) was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and has the honor of having his name adorn the trophy awarded to the Super Bowl champion each year. The production is uplifting and powerful in its own right. The audience gets a glimpse into the people and relationships that help create his life off the field, including his wife and some of the key players whose careers were formed from his unique leadership both in and out of the football setting. You don’t have to be a football fan to enjoy this play, but if you are looking for an inspiration family drama that will leave you moved, then LOMBARDI is the show for you. Lombardi tickets are on sale now for this ninety minute open ended production.
