Lysistrata Jones Broadway
ScheduleMatinee: Wed & Sat 2pmEvening: Mon through Sat 8pm
The new Lysistrata Jones Broadway musical brings a fresh perspective to the 2,400-year-old comedy it is based on. The show is scheduled to open on December 14, 2011 at the Walter Kerr Theatre. The production is being billed as a "boisterous new pop musical comedy," and certainly a good slogan for the marque. The story of the Athens University basketball team which has not been able to win a game in thirty years looks to a transfer student Lysistrata Jones to pull them out of the slump. Written by Douglas Carter Beane (Sister Act, The Little Dog Laughed) and Lewis Flinn "Lysistrata Jones" is receiving mixed reviews but is sure to find an audience in those looking for something off the beaten path on Broadway this holiday season. The Lysistrata Jones Broadway musical is based on funnyman Aristophane's ancient Greek play "Lysistrata", which tells a tale of a plan of a "sex strike" during wartime to inspire the fighters. Beane's work centers around the Athens University basketball team that are in a long slump looking for a win. Lysistrata Jones transfers to the school and comes up with a simple plan to turn things around, have the girlfriends of the ball players go on "strike." The basketball team suddenly are forced into a new motivation to get the first win in thirty years and turn things around not only for the team but their own self-interests. Beane has said that his inspiration and ideas for reworking the play comes from recent genres in comedic film such as "American Pie." Lysistrata Jones is a fun musical which has new show tunes, interesting dance routines and slapstick style comedy throughout. The talented cast includes: Patti Murin Liz Mikel Josh Segarra Jason Tam Lindsay Nicole Chambers Alexander Aguilar Ato Blankson-Wood Katie Boren Kat Nejat LaQuet Sharnell Teddy Toye Alex Wyse All of whom do a great job which is more challenging then it may appear. The choreography runs quite smoothly and blends well with the game of basketball. The cast worked hard on perfecting their ball-handling skills but whether or not the balls end up in the audience or everything goes perfect is not of the utmost importance and adds a bit of uncertainty and excitement to the show. Music and lyrics are by Lewis Flinn with direction and choreography by Dan Knechtges. The Lysistrata Jones Broadway musical is scheduled for an open-ended run at the Walter Kerr Theatre and certainly worth checking out.
