Profile Of The Theater

When the fourth Madison Square Garden opened in 1968, The Theater, then, was known as the Felt Forum, in honor of its President, Irving Mitchell Felt. In early 1990, the then owners of Madison Square Garden – Paramount Communications – renamed the Felt Forum as the Paramount.

Following its $200 million renovation project in Sep 1991, the Madison Square Garden – with its completely refurbished 20,000-seat arena, a new state-of-the-art center scoreboard with four jumbo video screens, specialty food concession areas, waiter/waitress service, and much more - introduced its 5,600-seat multi-use theater as The Theater. Since then, it is known as The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

The Madison Square Garden Theater, built on the site of the former Felt Forum, with its latest staging, sound and lighting techniques, hosted a variety of shows. From Harry Connick Jr.'s fifteen sold-out engagements, to the incomparable James Taylor, to the world championship prize fights, to an HBO Comedy Special with George Carlin, and a visit by the Dalai Lama – all in its inaugural year.

Mainly used for hosting rock concerts, the 5,600 seats of the Madison Square Garden Theater are all with clear sightlines, with no bad seat in the house. No seat in this great venue is more than 177 feet away from the Center Stage. The Theater at Madison Square Garden ventured into Broadway style productions with the launch of A Christmas Carol in 1994. This musical production of Charles Dickens’ classic story, choreographed and directed by Susan Stroman (a Tony-award winner), enjoyed a 10-year run, with more than 2.5 million people seeing the show.
