A Brief History

The present Madison Square Garden (MSG) is the 4th garden. The first one, known as MSG I, opened on May 31, 1879 and was demolished in 1889. The second garden – MSG II - opened on June 16, 1890 with a seating capacity of 17,000. The third garden - MSG III - took only 249 days to build and opened on Dec 15, 1925 with a hockey game. MSG III closed out on the same day MSG IV had its opening on Feb 11, 1968, with the opening hosted by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. The present MSG is located in midtown Manhattan.

On March 8, 1971, Muhammad Ali defeated Joe Frazier in 15 rounds. The bout was billed as The Fight Of The Century.

In 1972, The King – Elvis Presley - held four shows at the legendary venue and all the shows were completely sold out!

1974 saw John Lennon’s last performance at Madison Square Garden as a surprise guest at Elton John’s concert.

Mar 28, 1976 saw Olympic Gold Medallist, Nadia Comaneci score her first ‘perfect 10’ at the American Cup.

1979 saw Pope John Paul II visit Madison Square Garden.Oct 1993 saw Madonna bring her ‘The Girlie show’ to Madison Square Garden.

Boxing’s biggest fights were held at the venue, which was considered the Mecca of boxing. The Theater at Madison Square Garden, which hosts concerts, stage shows, graduation ceremonies, among others, has a seating capacity between 2,000 and 5,600. No seat in the Theater is more than 177 feet from the stage.
