Magic Bird Broadway

Wed through Sat 8pm
The new Eric Simonson's Magic Bird Broadway play opened this weekend in New York. The production is a follow-up to the commercial success of his 2010 Broadway sports play "Lombardi." While many critics were skeptical about a play revolving around sports, figures could draw a Broadway audience, Mr. Simonson seems to have found his niche. Though Lombardi was not a blockbuster by any means, it was successful enough for further exploration into the genre. Magic Bird Broadway tells the story of two of the biggest legends in professional basketball. The true-based story looks at the journey of Larry Bird and Earvin "Magic" Johnson from college to the NBA. The play is scheduled to open at the Longacre Theatre on April 11, 2012.
The new play is a sort of sports biography. The story follows the interesting relationship of the NBA's two biggest figures of the era. The "bio" begins with their college years and rise to fame into professional basketball. The tale even covers the times spent on the popular Olympic "Dream Team." The main focus of the play is telling of the fearless competitive battles the two had on the court. The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers were fierce rivalries and the time with Magic and Bird being the pinnacle players of the firestorm which drew such sports and main-stream media attention. Off the court, however, the two superstars built a strong and lasting friendship. While a basketball-theme play may seem odd fit for Broadway, the production hopes to pick up the sports fan as well as those who enjoy true-based biographical style stage productions.
The New Magic Bird Broadway play has opened to mixed reviews from critics. Well-liked and respected critics of theater seem to show less enthusiasm for this work then the former more popular "Lombardi." Main criticism revolve around the theme of the stage being unable to bring out the athletic accomplishments of the two sports legends. Further, the characters never fully develop on stage or create the strong excitement, they did on and off the court.
The new Magic Bird Broadway play is directed by Thomas Kail. The cast includes Kevin Daniels starring as Magic Johnson and Tug Coker as Larry Bird with Deirdre O'Connell (Georgia Bird/Shelly/Patricia Moore), Peter Scolari (Red Auerbach/Jerry Buss/Pat Riley), Rob Ray Manning, Jr. (Michael Cooper/Henry Alvarado/Frank) and Francois Battiste (Jon Lennox/Ron Baxter/Willy). The cast of just six members rotate in and out of different characters, with Daniels and Coker playing only their lead roles. The play has the full support of the NBA alongside with the involvement of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Magic Bird is an inspiring true story of the road to greatness.
