From The Writer Of "Lombardi," A New Sports Play!

Magic Bird tickets are selling for the new play by Eric Simonson on Broadway. The story about two NBA basketball legends of an era and how they competed on the court and created a strong friendship off it. Larry Bird and Earvin "Magic" Johnson could arguably be called two of the greatest and most important players throughout any era of the NBA. While a story about sports figures may seem an odd place on the "big stage," Mr. Simonson found some success with his previous sports play "Lombardi." He hopes to capture the attention of theater audiences and sports fans once again with his charming story from within the theatre. Magic Bird tickets are selling for all performances at the Longacre Theatre.

The play is another daring attempt by playwright Eric Simonson to meld together storytelling, sports and theater on Broadway. While his previous work Lombardi was not a huge commercial success, at least when compared to "super musical's" such as Wicked and Lion King, the production did find an audience. The 2010 play's decent success was enough to launch yet another sports story to "The Great White Way."

The play includes a six actor cast whom tell the story of Magic and Bird's strong rivalry on the court. The story follows their college careers through to their rise to stardom, including their pinnacle Olympics "Dream Team." The Celtics (Bird) and Lakers (Magic) franchises had a huge rivalry during the two players careers and met on the court often. The rivalry between two of the greatest players in the history of the game led to some of the finest games and moments for the sport. While Magic and Bird both had fierce competitive nature, they could build a strong friendship off of the court and after their careers. Magic/Bird explores this fascinating and intriguing sports story.

The play is directed by Thomas Kail and written by Eric Simonson. The six-member cast includes Kevin Daniels is starring as Magic Johnson and Tug Coker as Larry Bird with Deirdre O'Connell Peter Scolari, Rob Ray Manning, Jr. and Francois Battiste. The latter four actors take on multiple roles throughout the play. The play has the full endorsement of the National Basketball Association, including the involvement of Bird and Johnson.

The play is currently running in previews at the Longacre Theatre from March 21, 2012. Magic Bird tickets will go on sale for opening night, which is scheduled for April 11, 2012 and set for an open-ended run. For those who enjoyed Eric Simonson's 2010 play "Lombardi" this latest work is sure to resonate. For sports fans and those looking for a play with a great story then Magic Bird is certainly worth checking out.
