If you had liked ABBA – the group that created a sensation more than 20 years ago – then Mamma Mia! the musical, is for you. Songs by ABBA are still so popular that you will find late elementary, middle school, high school and college age kids thronging the Winter Garden Theater for Mamma Mia! This is a musical about a mother, a daughter, and three possible dads! This, as the information on the show claims, is ‘a trip down the aisle you’ll never forget!’

The musical previewed on October 5, 2001, and opened on October 18, 2001 at the Winter Garden Theater. Based on 20-year-old hits by the famous group ABBA, the musical opened with more than a years tickets all sold out!

Mamma Mia! is a story of a single mother, whose daughter is planning to get married on a Greek isle. Not knowing who her father is, Sophie, the daughter, invites three of her mother, Donna’s, former lovers as likely candidates, thinking she would be able to figure out who her father really is. The musical has been directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony van Laast. The musical has music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the one half of the famous super group – ABBA, and features 22 of the groups greatest hits, including Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes It All, Take A Chance on Me, Super Trouper, S.O.S., and Knowing Me, Knowing You, among others.

The Theater

Mamma Mia! opened at the Winter Garden Theater to full house, and has been running to full houses for the last 5 years. The Theater was built by the Shubert brothers in 1911 on the spot where the American Horse Exchange building existed. The exterior, somewhat Greco-Roman was designed by Architect W Albert Swasey, and was remodeled in 1922-23 by Architect Herbert J Krapp. This is the theater where the musical – Cats – became the longest running show in the history of Broadway, and it is here that it gave its final 7,485th performance, before closing. Mamma Mia! has completed 2,148 performances as of December 3, 2006, at the Winter Garden Theater, and is the seventh longest running of all the shows currently on Broadway.
