Terrence McNally's Powerful Play Is Revived On Broadway!

Master Class tickets are now on sale for the revival of Terrence McNally's award winning play on Broadway. The production opened at the Friedman Theater on June 21, 2011 and is set for a limited engage with final curtain on August 14. This highly anticipated staging features Tony and Emmy Award winner Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey,) in the role of opera diva Maria Callas. The Manhattan Theatre Club presents a masterpiece sure to garner much attention this Broadway season.

Master Class tickets first sold when the play staged by the Philadelphia Theatre Company at the Mark Taper Forum. After the successful run, the play began production for Broadway. Master Class ran for twelve previews before premiering at the John Golden Theatre on November 15, 1995. The show ran for 596 performances under the direction of Leonard Foglia. The cast included Zoe Caldwell, Audra Mcdonald, Karen Kay Cody, David Loud, and Jay Hunter Morris. Eventually renowned Broadway star Patti LuPone would replace Caldwell in the role of Callas. The show saw great successes and won the 1996 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Play. Caldwell and McDonald would go onto both win Tony Awards for their superb performances the same year.

The Revival

After an amazing run of Master Class at the Kennedy Center in Washington the Broadway production began work. McNally's work was originally scheduled to open at an earlier date but the success of "Good People" at the Tony Awards extended the plays run. Master Class tickets are available at the box office and online after the official June 21, 2011 opening.

The Story

McNally tells the intriguing story of Maria Callas, a driven and dedicated opera singer. Rather than focus on her earlier popular work the playwright looks into her later years as she tries to teach young students how to hone their skills in a "master class." Maria works to instill the virtues she inherited for hard work, dedication and sacrifice. The legendary opera singer is captivating, commanding and larger-than-life and becomes taken back by the students. Soon she begins the reflect back on her glory days and successes both in life and career. Maria rants about her unattractive young appearance and press reviews she endured as well as her blatant hatred for her rivals. Her musings come to a climax as she begins a strong monologue to her students about the sacrifices one must make for the sake of art.

Master Class tickets are suitable for ages twelve and older. The production is set for a strict limited run. Make sure to grab a seat and not miss the wonderfully entertaining piece of theater magic!
