Memphis On Broadway
WALKING IN MEMPHIS!Memphis, a new musical, opened in October 2009 at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre. Come see why Memphis the birthplace of rock 'n' roll is taking Broadway by storm. The story focuses on a mixed-race couple and the obstacles they face during the early Civil Rights Era. The music for this production was written by David Bryan of Bon Jovi fame. The musical demonstrates what happens when a 1950's DJ decides to play African American music to his white audience. Is America ready for this? The production was inspired by the real life events of the legendary DJ Dewey Phillips, and the music that started the rock 'n' roll revolution. Set during the beginning of the Civil Rights movement, Memphis on Broadway depicts both the good and the bad of this famous town, the good being the music, an American sound that blended "race music" and hillbilly music (later called rhythm & blues and country) and the bad being the racism and general ugliness that came to define the era. While Memphis doesn't ignore the city's troubled past, (Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated there) it is a musical first and the soulful score sets the tone for the show, and sets it apart from other musicals of its kind. The cast includes Chad Kimball, Montego Glover, and Derrick Baskin. The book and lyrics are by Joe Dipietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and the music was written by Bon Jovi keyboardist Bryan. The cast recording of the Broadway rock musical Memphis is on sale exclusively at the Shubert Theatre. The exclusive release will include a bonus track featuring composer David Bryan performing "Memphis Lives in Me." Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) directs the production. This unique musical has critics raving. Michael Kuchwara of the Associated Press said, ‘‘The sensuous, soulful sound of rhythm 'n' blues hits the audience right from the start of [this] exhilarating new musical now shaking Broadway's Shubert Theatre. Take a deep breath as the curtain rises because the exuberance doesn't stop.’’ David Richardson of WOR Radio said, ‘The biggest hit on Broadway this year or any other year! See it even if you have to bribe somebody to get tickets.’’ The story deals with some pretty heavy issues and portrays a very dark time in the history of the country, but ultimately it is a very uplifting musical that will having you leaving the theater craving more.
