History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

The Theater was built by Irving Berlin - the now legendary composer and lyricist - and Sam H. Harris, to house revues. The theater then presented its first play; a smash hit comedy - Cradle Snatchers, starring the young Humphrey Bogart. The Theater was considered perfect for such revues and large cast plays. It opened in September 1921 with the Music Box Revue that featured songs by Irving Berlin, and thereafter this Theater, seating 1,010, hosted a new one every year until 1925.

The Theater had the celebrated playwrights George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart present a number of hits, staring from their first – Once in a Lifetime - in 1930, to The Man Who Came To Dinner in 1939. Other than Berlin, great composers, such as Cole Porter and the Gershwins also had their musical shows here.

Picnic, Bus Stop, and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, by playwright William Inge, Side By Side By Sondheim – a musical revue, the murder mystery - Deathtrap, and the stage version of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s movie musical State Fair, etc, have all been hosted by the theater.

The Theater

In December 1987, the theater was designated a New York City landmark. Currently, the Theater is co-owned by the Shubert’s and the estate of Irving Berlin, and operated by the Shubert Organization. Today, operated by the Shubert Organization, it is owned half by the Shubert’s and half by the estate of Irving Berlin.

Architects C Howard Crane and E George Kiehler designed the ttheater. It has a neo-Classic façade that is fronted by four columns that support a porch. The classic Adamesque interior, of typically fine plaster and paintwork, is tastefully decorated. The charming and tastefully decorated interiors of the theater give off a feeling of intimacy. Its box seats are unusually large and are very comfortable, and so are its bathrooms – roomy. The attractive downstairs lounge has nice wall paintings, with the lobby having a plaque and wall exhibit displaying Irving Berlin’s rich history and that of the theatre.
