The Nassau Coliseum, formally known as the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, was built as a 15,000 seat arena on 63 acres of the 1,200 acres Mitchel Field – a former Army/Air Force base in Nassau County. With the base shut down in 1960 and declared surplus property, Nassau County obtained the property from the United States Government in 1961. After considering proposals, such as building a large central library, or a civic center, in addition to building a museum and cultural center, or a residential housing, it decided to build, at the cost of $32 million, an arena dedicated to those who made the supreme sacrifice for the United States.

Built in the early 1960s, the Nassau Coliseum increased its seating capacity to over 18,000 from 1981 to 1984. From state-of-the-art rock concerts, to touring family shows, to professional wrestling, to boxing, track and field, lacrosse and soccer, the Nassau Coliseum has hosted nearly all forms of entertainment and sports. The New York Islanders - the NHL team, and the NY Dragons - the arena football team, both, call the Nassau Coliseum their home.

The Nassau Coliseum is privately operated by SMG Management, which also manages 74 arenas, 7 stadiums, 51 convention centers, 34 performing arts centers, and 10 other recreational facilities, grossing more than 1 billion dollars, each year.
