Peter Shaffer’s well known play ‘Equus’ is currently playing in the Broadhurst Theatre. This very famous play was first staged in 1973 at the Royal National Theatre in London. The play was adapted into a film in 1977 that starred Richard Burton, Peter Firth and Eileen Atkins and won a number of Golden Globe awards besides nominations under several categories of Academy Awards.

Equus made its debut on Broadway in October 1974 at the Plymouth Theatre. Directed by John Dexter, the play won the 1975 Tony award for the best play. The two main characters of the play are Dr Martin Dysart, the psychiatrist and Alan Strang the young boy. While Anthony Hopkins played the role of Dysart, Peter Firth acted as Alan Strang in the 1975 enacted play. The play, revived many years later in 2007, continues to receive excellent reviews for its portrayal of the young boy and his confused state of mind. On one side he worships horses and on the other hand mixes his feelings with sexual tones. The play is also famous for the suspense and the drama that unfolds with Dysart’s questioning of Slang and the secrets revealed in the process. The play starts with Dysart being approached by a court magistrate for helping unravel the mystery of a young lad who has blinded six horses for no known reason. Dysart’s attempts to understand the psychology of Slang through use of advertising jingles, stories and question answer games have mesmerized viewers. Dysart’s revelations about Slang’s confused views about religious and sexual values also hold the viewer’s to their seats. The interaction between Dysart and Slang reveals that the latter is fascinated by horses and dreams of freeing them from the chains tying them. Not only this, Slang has mixed and confused feelings about sex since his mother is a devout Christian while father is an atheist. The current play is produced by Shubert Organization and stars the Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe as the disturbed boy Alang Strang.
