The team is the second of the two NY teams from Major League Baseball, and is based in Flushing, Borough of Queens, NYC. The other team is the NY Yankees. The Mets play in the Eastern Division of the National League. On July 27, 1959, two years after the Brooklyn Dodgers, and the NY Giants left New York to set base in California, leaving the city without any National League Franchise, William A. Shea, an attorney, announced the formation of a third league – the Continental League.

The Team

The following year, the organizers of the Continental League, along with Shea, reached an agreement with the two established leagues – the National and the American leagues - to abandon the new league in exchange for creating four new franchises – two per league. One of the teams, which later on became the New York Mets, became a part of the National League on March 6, 1961, and was officially known as The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club Inc. On March 8, 1961, it was announced that the team would be known as the ‘Mets,’ after having considered names, such as Bees, Burros, Continentals, Skyscrapers, Jets, Skyliners and Meadowlarks.

The Mets played their first official game in the franchise – an away game at St. Louis – on April 11, 1962, and lost 11-4 to the Cardinals. They also lost their first home game, played at the Polo Grounds, 4-3 to the Pirates. However, on April 23, 1962, the New York Mets secured their first victory in franchise history with a 9-1 victory in Pittsburgh.

In 1961, it was decided to build a new home for the Mets, initially named the Flushing Meadows Park. The new Park cost $28.5 million and 29 months to build. It was later decided to name it in honor of William A. Shea – the man who brought back the National League Baseball to NY. The Shea Stadium was the first stadium that could be converted to a football stadium, and back, with the help of two motor operated stands.

The Mets played their first game at the Shea Stadium on April 17, 1964, and lost 4-3 to the Pirates. On September 24, 1969, they won their first National League East Championship in with a 6-0 victory over the Cardinals at Shea.
