The story centers around a small group of young men who buy and sell newspapers, known as "newsies." Many of the workers are homeless and/or orphaned and live together. The small group of main characters include Jack Kelly his disabled friend Crutchie and brothers Davey, and Les. The group hopes to one day be able to leave the city and job to head out west. Jack wakes up one morning after dodging being captured by a juvenile detention center to learn the publication company of the newspaper has raised prices, meaning less pay for the newsies. Jack becomes outraged by the news and begin planing protests against the cost increase. While Jack struggles to motivate the fellow workers, Davey can launch a full-scale strike. The action causes direct confrontation with police and strikebreakers. The story gets the attention of a young up and coming female reporter Katherine Plumber, whom helps bring the story to the forefront. The group continues to fight in their cause devising a hopeful plan to fulfill all their needs.
