Broadway Musical

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

Next to Normal has been a huge success in Broadway. It is a musical directed by Devananad Janki, the director for the musical Rent. This Broadway show is about a family of four that tries to take care of themselves and each other. The family consists of the mother, father, sixteen year old daughter and the almost eighteen year old son.

Alice Ripley portrays the mother named Diane. She is a classy, but sexy individual who tries to hold on to her family. In 2009, Ripley received a Tony Award for Best Actress in this musical. Along with Next to Normal, Ripley has been seen in other popular musicals such as The Rocky Horror Show, The Vagina Monologues and Sunset Boulevard.

J. Robert Spencer plays Dan, the overworked father. Spencer was nominated for a Tony Award for this character. Spencer can be seen in Jersey Boys, the musical and appearances on television shows such as All My Children and Law and Order.

The dreamy, sophisticated, boy next door is played by Kyle Dean Massey. This gentleman portrays the son Gabe in Next to Normal, as everything a mother could ever dream of. He is a perfect son. Massey is a newcomer to the Broadway scene, but he has been appreciated in the musicals Wicked and Xanadu.

The sixteen year old daughter, Natalie, tries to be so perfect. This character is played by Jennifer Damiano. She made her Broadway debut in Spring Awakening when she was fifteen years old.

The Next to Normal Broadway production also has its own merchandise. Shirts, hats and key chains are just a few of the items that can be purchased online or at the show. This is a musical based around a stereotypical, dysfunctional family. Diane, the mother, feels like she is completely falling apart. In Next to Normal, Diane sees a therapist because she thinks he can help her with her problems. Between taking pills and dealing with family life, Diane lets the audience know how she really feels in the scene with “Catch Me I’m Falling.”

The father, Dan, tries so hard to pull Diane back to her life and reality, but it turns out to be quite difficult for him due to working overtime. Gabe is the typical, perfect son who can do no wrong. Natalie, on the other hand, is the younger sister who feels like her parents do not love her as much as they love Gabe. She tries hard to be the perfect daughter, but it just does not work out for her. This emotion is clearly portrayed in the song “Super boy and the Invisible Girl.”

The Next to Normal Broadway musical runs about two hours and twenty minutes long. Tickets can be purchased online or at the theater. This show may not be appropriate for children under thirteen years of age. Show times are seven days a week, with the earliest time of 7 PM on the weekdays and shows at 3:30 PM and 7 PM on the weekends. Next To Normal Broadway Tickets start as low as USD 36.50.
