NEW MUSICAL NOMINATED FOR ELEVEN TONY AWARDS! This contemporary, new musical opened on April 15, 2009 at Booth Theatre and had made quite a splash. Next to Normal has been nominated for eleven Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical and Best Score. It is a powerful drama that explores the lives of a suburban family in crisis. The off-Broadway production won the 2008 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Score and most of the cast is making the transfer to Broadway. Rolling Stone magazine said that this production was, “The best new musical of the season – by a mile.” The story deals with a mother who is desperately trying to deal with her worsening condition of bi-polar disorder while struggling to keep her family intact. It deals with the effect her illness has on the family unit and what they all must do to survive. The play also addresses some pretty dark issues including drug abuse, suicide and ethics in psychiatry. The talented cast includes many of the actors who starred in the off-Broadway production. In the role of Diana is Tony nominated actress Alice Ripley who is probably best known for her role as a Siamese twin in Side Show. She has also played the role of Diana in the 2008 Arlington, VA production. Also making the transfer to this production in the role of Dan is Tony nominated actor J. Robert Spencer. He is best known for originated the role of Nick Massi in the 2005 smash hit Jersey Boys. The cast also stars Jennifer Damiano in her Broadway debut and Aaron Tveit who played Link Larkin in the Broadway production of Hairspray. The production features a thirty song score with music by Tom Kitt and a book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey. The show is currently an open-ended production and runs two hours and twenty minutes. Come see why the NY Times said, “A brave, breathtaking musical. It is sometimes more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical.” Don’t miss this highly praised musical.
